Citycell closed for unpaid dues

However, reports said the country,`s first cell,-phone cpmpany, a joint venture with a Singaporean firm, deposited Tk 1.3 billion to the BTRC Wednesday. But the amount fell short of two-thirds of the claimed arrears the apex court had ordered to be paid in the first installment.

As such, a BTRC team backed by law enforcers Thursday went to the office of Citycell, owned by BNP leader and forner foreign minister Morshed Khan at Mahakhali and snapped its spectrum line.

State minister for posts and telecommunications Tarana Halim announced the action at a press briefing hard on the heels of the shutdown.

`They won`t be able to pay the dues, as decided by the court for the first installment for now,,,`` she told reporters, meaning the measure is irrevocable.

Its subscribers had been asked to switch to other operators beforehand, officials said about the question of compensation for them.
