 Dalit politician Kovind becomes India`s President

Rising from society`s lowest segment, ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind became India`s 14th President, defeating Opposition candidate Meira Kumarp, also from such a caste.

Kovind bagged 65.65% votes and would succeed Pranab Mukherjee whose presidential term ends on July 25.

Kovind becomes a second Dalit to occupy the office after KR Narayanan, who was at the Rashtrapati Bhavan between1997 and 2002. He will take oath as President on 25 July.

The presidential polls on Monday saw nearly 99 per cent voting, the highest ever, according to returning officer.

Kovind had been leading since the beginning over his rival UPA candidate Meira Kumar during the counting on Thursday.
