Ex-PM Khaleda jailed for 5 years in graft case

Ex-PM and BNP chief Khaleda Zia was jailed Thursday for 5 years while her son Tarique Rahman and four others for 10 yrs in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, in one of few singularly significant cases of political implications.

The five others were also fined Tk 2.1 crore each.

The Anti-Corruption Commission had filed the case with Ramna Police Station against six persons, including Khaleda and BNP`s senior vice chairman and her eldest son Tarique Rahman. The other accused are former lawmaker Kazi Salim Haque, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Khaleda`s former principal secretary Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and BNP founder general Ziaur Rahman`s nephew Momenur Rahman.

 Kamal and Momenur were tried in absentia.
