 Tigers triumph in Test centenary by beating SL lions

Bangladesh tigers made history in cricket as they won their centenary Test by four wickets against Sri Lanka at Colombo’s P Sara Oval Sunday, level ling a two-match series at 1-1.

A brilliant knock of 82 from Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal and the third-wicket stand with Sabbir Rahman of 109 enabled the Tigers to beat the Lions for the first time in Test cricket. Bangladesh recorded their ninth win in 100 Tests with this victory.

Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath took three wickets each to peg back Bangladesh. Dilruwan captured 3-59 in 22 while Herath took 3-75 in 24.5 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan had a splendid show with six wickets and a hundred during their first innings of 467. Mustafizur Rahman seemed to be getting back to his best and captured five wickets in this match. Mosaddek Hossain was the sixth wicket to fall for Bangladesh.

The win in Bangladesh’s hundredth Test match set off celebrations at the grounds as also back at home.   

Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged Man-of-the-Series.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina congratulated the players, officials and every other person related to the national cricket team on the historic win in their 100th Test.

Prime Minister`s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Sheikh Hasina congratulated the Tigers after they sealed the four-wicket victory, their first over the Lankan Lions. Other national leaders also hailed the cricketers.

"She spoke to skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Man-of-the-Series Shakib Al Hasan over the phone. She prayed for the wellbeing of the members of the team," he said.

Opener Tamim Iqbal, who cracked a fine 82 under pressure in Bangladesh’s 191-run chase on the final day, became Man of the Match.

He instantly passed on his Man-of-the-Match award to maestro Shakib Al Hasan. His humility was cited in cricket broadcast.
