 Folk music maestro Abdur Rahman  Boyati passes away

Legendary folk singer of the country Abdur Rahman Boyati breathed his last at a city hospital Monday, after suffering long from chronic diseases. He was 76.

Earlier, he was admitted into the hospital in critical condition of some neurological and urological complications on Sunday night, family sources said.

He had earlier been under treatment at the Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital since he suffered a brain stroke three months back.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Abdur Rahman Boyati and prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed her sympathies to the members of the bereaved family.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali also condoled on the death of the legendary folk singer of Bangladesh.

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, in her condolence message, said, “He  was the brightest star of folk music in the country.”

Shawkat Ali also termed his death an irreparable lose to the country’s cultural arena and prayed for eternal salvation for the departed soul of the maestro.

Abdur Rahman Boyati was born in Dayaganj area under Sutrapur Police Station of the capital on January 1, 1939. He was a renowned lyrist, tuner, music director and poet of the country - all at once.

Boyati started his music career under the tutelage of prominent folk singer poet Alauddin Boyati in 1956. Ever since, the maestro had almost 500 solo and some 200 mixed albums of folk songs to his credit.

He performed at a dinner party and cultural programmes at the White House in the United States at the invitation of the then US President, George HW Bush, as the first-ever and only singer of the country.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Abdur Rahman Boyati was honoured with some prestigious awards like the ‘Presidency Award’, the Citycell-Channel i Music Award’, the ‘Nazrul Academy Sammanana’, the ‘Samar Das Smriti Award’ and the ‘USA Jagorani Shilpigoshthi Award’.

The body of the singer will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar at around 12:00pm today so that people from all walks of life can pay their last respects to him. Later, he will be laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard at Dayaganj, daily sun reported.
