10 die in stampede at Ctg ex-mayor Mohiuddin`s qulkhwani


In a tragic incident of its own kind in such a funeral function, at least 10 people were killed in a stampede during holy meals at the kulkhwani for Chittagong`s former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury on Monday noon in the port city.

Hospital authorities identified nine of the deceased until 9:30pm. They are Krishnapada Das, 45, Sudhir Das, 50, Jhantu Das Pintu, 45, Pradeep Talukder, 46, Liton Deb, 43, Deepankar Das Rahul, 326, Satyabrata Bhattacharya, 42, Alok Bhoumik, 32, and Dhona Sheel, 60. 

 Chowdhury`s family arranged an all-caste prayer function on the occasion and a non-beef funeral feast at the city`s Rima Convention Centre for people of other religions. And here the stampede occurred for ``overcrowding``, police said.

Mohiuddin’s family announced Tk 100,000 in compensation for each of the families of the dead, said Awami League’s Chittagong City unit Deputy Office Secretary Jawaharlal Hajari.

They will also receive an additional Tk 5,000 for the funerals and the family will also bear the cost of treatment for those injured, said Hajari, who was in charge of the event at the community centre.

The veteran Awami League leader, who was chief of the the Chittagong metropolitan unit of the ruling party, died of old-age ailments last Friday (December 15).
